Abstract: 

Based on new economic geography, we consider the
racetrack economy, where manufacturing activities are distributed
continuously. We show that smooth and dense distributions are always
unstable equilibria, whereas agglomeration in 1 or 2 atomic cities is a
stable equilibrium for any economic parameters given regular transport
costs including linear ones.
