We develop a theoretical model in which a household maximizes its expected utility through the allocation of family members to different locations for employment. The theoretical implications are adapted to the conditional logit specification of location choice for empirical analyses. Using the South African household data collected from 1995 to 1999, we estimated the determinants of destination of black migrant workers. Our empirical results are mostly consistent with the theoretical prediction, and we find some evidence that the relative importance of income risk diversification motive has increased with the end of apartheid.
